New Malden is a district name that developed in the mid-19th century around the railway station originally called Malden, lying chiefly within the ancient parish of Malden (Surrey) and partly extending into Coombe; the name “New Malden” came into common use after the arrival of the railway in 1846, while the area’s county designation shifted to Greater London only in 1965. New Malden is a post-railway district name within the parish of Malden (and partly Coombe), remaining in Surrey until it entered Greater London in 1965.
