Death*Moses Hart died of kidney disease and uraemia on 25 April 1901 at London Hospital in Mile End New Town, London, EnglandG.4,5
When he was 5 years old the 1851 census found his family living at 101 Petticoat Lane, Whitechapel. His father was a fishmonger and they had an Irish servant name Mary Ryan, age 35, with them, as well as his cousin Solomon Joel, age 22. who worked as an assistant fishmonger.

Census records and the marriage records of his son Abraham and Elias say he was a fishmonger, as does his death record. His son Barnett's marriage record says his father was a 'dealer' but that was used as a generic term that could include a dealer in fish.

When the census was taken in 1881 Martha and Moses were living at 9 Providence Place in St. Botolph's Aldgate, London, England. Moses was a fish merchant at the time.

  5. There are multiple Moses Hart death records in the right time period to be our Moses, but this Apr 1901 record is very likely to be him. First of all, it was for a fishmonger, secondly, his two sons Abraham and Elias were married in 1897 and in 1901, the latter showing the father of the groom to be deceased by Aug of 1901. And finally the informant was his son Barnett Hart whose address listed on the death record is the same address of our Barnett in the 1901 census.

The 1901 census shows that Barnett Hart, general dealer age 36, born Bethnal Green, lived at 70 Hedson Buildings in Shoreditch with his wife Rosetta, age 29, and children Lawrence and Alfred. That same year he was the informant on his father's death certificate and gave the same address.

Some online trees confuse him with the Barnett Hart who was father of the famous American playwright Moss Hart. But that Barnett's 1901 marriage record in Manhattan, available on familysearch.org, clearly states that he had parents other than Moses and Martha (Aarons) Hart. The two Barnetts were both born in London and were roughly of the same age. Without the marriage record it is easy to confuse them.

On his 1897 marriage record to Jennie Harris (sister of his brother Elias's wife Phoebe) he is said to be a widower so must have had an earlier wife. His occupation was stated as auctioneer. He was living at 11 Goring Street in Houndsditch at the time, while Jennie's address was just stated as 116 in Houndsditch, as if the street was accidentally ommitted.

He is probably the Mr. Abraham Hart, age 46, auctioneer, who arrived in England from Cape Town, South Africa on 12 Nov 1915.

There is also a 16-year-old Abraham Hart who died in the Strand, London in the second quarter of 1886. Two ancestry family trees use this as his death date with no other evidence.4

Their "two" children Rachel and Katie may be one in the same, as their estimated year of birth - established from passenger list records - is 1903 for both. If they are the same person, she was Katie in 1927 and Rachel/Ray as a married woman.5

Death*He died of a heart attack on 18 August 1964 in his apartment at 240 Central Park South in New York, New YorkG.2
His obituary appeared in the 19 August 1964 New York Times and read as follows:

Bernard Hart, a producer and stage manager who frequently worked with his brother, the late Moss Hart, was found dead yesterday in his apartment at 240 Central Park South. He apparently suffered a heart attack. His age was 53. Although he began his theatrical career in the shadow cast by his older, taller, more intense brother, and never fully emerged from it, Mr. Hart established a reputation in his own right. In partnership with Joseph Hyman he produced “Dear Ruth,” the successful Norman Krasna comedy, in 1944. Ten years later they offered another success, Jerome Chodorov and Joseph Fields's “Anniversary Waltz.” The producing team also presented three of Moss Hart's plays, “Christopher Blake” in 1946, “Light Up the Sky” in 1948 and “The Climate of Eden“ in 1952. Bernard Hart, who was known along Broadway as Bernie, was also stage manager of “My Fair Lady” for four years and of “Camelot” for two, both of which were staged by his brother. At his death he was stage manager of “Wonderful World of Chemistry,” the presentation at the du Pont Pavilion at the World's Fair. In his autobiography, “Act One,” Moss Hart, who died in 1961, recalled an incident that took place the day after the opening of “Once in a Lifetime,“ his first success, which he wrote in collaboration with George S. Kaufman. After reading the reviews, the two brothers took a taxi to the Music Box Theater, where it was playing. Moss Hart went to the box office and drew a $500 advance to move their parents out of a Brooklyn tenement. As his brother counted the bills, Bernie quipped, “When do they change the name of the theater to the Money Box?” The jest reduced Moss Hart to hysterics, and from then on, Bernie became known as a punster, storyteller and chronicler of Broadway. His headquarters for 30 years was the corner of the Little I Bar under the stairs at Sardi's restaurant on 44th Street, where he gathered a group of eight or nine around him at the cocktail hour and again at 11:30 P.M., after the last curtains had fallen. In 1961, on his 50th birthday, more than 200 persons attended a party for him at Sardi's. Bernie heard himself roasted and eulogized in songs and skits, and he received a suitably mounted two-by-four-inch piece of the bar. Replacing it in the bar was a brass plate that read, “Bernie Hart Schlept Here,” which may have been as bad a pun as any Mr. Hart was guilty of. There were scores of anecdotes about Mr. Hart. After the opening of “The Survivors,” which was not a success, in 1948, Mr. Hart, the co?producer, stayed away from Sardi's for a week. When he returned he was covered with bandages — on his head, across the bridge of his nose, over both eyes. Each piece of plaster bore the name of a New York drama critic. Richard Maney, the press agent, recalled a bomb scare during the run of “My Fair Lady.” Detectives searched backstage at the Mark Bellinger Theater for an hour and finally left emptyhanded. “The only bomb they found,” Mr. Hart said later, “was the original script of Ankles Aweigh.“ “Ankles Aweigh” was an elaborate revue that had been described by the critics as one of the few unmistakable nadirs in theatrical history when it opened at the same theater a season or two earlier. Mr. Hart, who was a member of the Players Club and The Lambs had no immediate survivors. A funeral service will be held Friday at 11:30 A.M. at Frank E. Campbell's, Madison Avenue and 81st Street.2
