| From the 22 August 1966 Daily Item of Lynn: Squirmed Under. Fence 8-Year-Old Boy Drowns In Reservoir.
The lure of a fence and a pond on a clear summer day proved a fatal one for eight-year-old Thomas R. Birtwell, as the Lynn boy drowned in the standpipe reservoir off Sadler St. yesterday. The boy, who could not swim, plunged into the reservoir but, according to police, jumped into the water from a cement ledge after watching his older brother, William, 11, go for a swim. The youngsters had gone to the reservoir from their nearby home at 70 Perkins St. William had climbed over the chain-link fence at the gate, the only spot where the fence is not topped with barbed wire, and Thomas had squirmed under the fence. William said he was changing back into his play clothes when his younger brother jumped into the water. The lad called for help, and William went to his aid but lost him when he disappeared under the water. The cries for help from both boys brought a neighbor, J. Preston LeBlanc, 47 Preston St, to their aid. LeBlanc, who also had to climb over the gate, could not locate Thomas at first because of the murkiness of the water.
BODY FOUND. Police estimate it was 15 minutes before the body was found and brought to shore. Meanwhile, both police and fire departments had been alerted. Fire Capt. Harold Craven and his driver, firefighter William (Jerry) Sullivan, were riding by on nearby Parkland Ave when they heard the radio alarm. Sullivan, according to Capt Craven, cleared the fence, barbed wire and all, "like a deer" and rushed to the side of the boy to start mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Capt Craven directed the Fire Dept Rescue Squad to the area. They had to break open the gate to get their rescue vehicle with its special life-saving equipment to the scene. The boy was then rushed to Lynn Hospital, where physicians used electric shock methods and salt solutions in an effort to revive him. He was declared dead on arrival by Dr. Joseph Carella.
The drowning victim was due to enter the second grade of Lincoln School next month and was one of six children of Mr. and Mrs. William G. Birtwell, Jr. Mr. Birtwell is an agent for John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Co., and his wife, the former Annamary L. Crosky, is a registered nurse employed at the Parker Hospital. Their other children are: William A., a pupil in Grade 5 at Lincoln School; Robert N., 5; Jill, 14, Classical High sophomore; Annamary, 13, Grade 8 at Breed Junior High; and Nancy Rose, 3. The boy also leaves grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Birtwell of Gloucester, and Atty. and Mrs. Augustus Crosky of Lynn. Private funeral services will be held tomorrow at 10 AM in the Donovan and Cole Funeral Home, 86 Lafayette Pk. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s cemetery..4 |
