Ex-Pastor's Widow Dies In Michigan. The widow of the first pastor of the Lakeside Methodist Church, Mrs. Ella (Atkins) Stanley, died Monday following a brief illness at the home of a son, Robert Stanley of 7306 River Road, Flushing, Mich. She was the widow of the Rev. George D. Stanley who came to the Lakeside Church at the turn of the century as a student minister from Boston University. He died in 1951. Born in Lynn 75 years ago, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank W. Atkins. Her father was the original developer of the Lakeside section and was a member of one of East Lynn's most prominent families. She leaves another son, Frank Stanley of Los Angeles, Calif., and five grandchildren. Funeral services and burial took place today in Flushing.4 |

| When the 1910 census was taken Arthur and Mildred were living at 100 Euclid Avenue in Lynn, Mass. and he was the proprietor of a laundry. When Arthur filled out his World War I draft registration card in Sep 1918 - the month after Martha died - he was still living at 100 Euclid Avenue and was self-employed as the owner of a laundry located at 14 Goodhue St. in Salem. He was described as being tall and of medium build with brown eyes and dark brown hair. He gave his father's name as his nearest relative.
When the 1920 census was taken Arthur and his three children were still living on Euclid. When he filled out his World War II draft card in Apr 1942 his nearest relative was a Mrs. Natalie M. Parsons of the same address as his - 14 Nursery Street in Salem. He was still self-employed and owner of Parsons Laundry at 72 Loring Avenue in Salem. Now he was described as being 5'10 1/2" tall weighing 190 pounds with brown eyes, gray hair, and a ruddy complexion.
When Arthur died in Sep 1956 he was living at 14 Nursery Street in Salem. |

Retired Minister Dies at Flushing. Funeral Wednesday For George D. Stanley. Flushing--Services will be held Wednesday for the Rev. George D. Stanley, 81, retired Methodist minister, who died Sunday at his home. 302 Maple St., after an illness of two weeks. Rites will be at Methodist Church. Dr. Harry A. Brewer, Vassar, former pastor here, will officiate and burial will be in Flushing Cemetery. The Body will he at the Whéeler Funeral Home until one hour before services. Mr. Stanley was born in Ireland Dec. 18, 1869, the son of Robert and Lydia Stanley. He came to the United States at the age of 16 and served half a century as a Methodist minister. He joined the Main Conference in 1897 after attending Boston University School of Theology, and in 1909 he joined the New England Southern Conference. Most of his ministry was spent in New England. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Westerly, R. I., and of the Odd Fellows at Putnam, Conn. He was married to Ella Atkins at Lynn. Mass., June 25, 1902, and had lived in Flushing for the last five years. Surviving are his wife; two sons, Frank of Los Angeles and Robert of Flushing; four brothers, William and James of Methuen, Mass., Joseph of Andover, Mass., and Robert of Clearwater, Fla; a sister, Mrs. Robert O'Hara, Andover, and five grandchildren.
A second obituary appeared in a Massachusetts newspaper called The Republican out of Springfield: "FORMER PASTOR STANLEY IS DEAD. Succumbs in Michigan; Served Wesley Methodist From '36 to '45. Warehouse Point, Conn., Jan. 3 -- Word has been received of the death in Flushing, Mich., Sunday afternoon of Rev. George D. Stanley, from 1936 to 1945 pastor of Wesley Methodist Church here. After serving five churches in Maine he was pastor of churches in Jewett City, Voluntown and Putnam, Conn., Westerly and Providence, R.I., and New Bedford and Freetown, Mass. He leaves his wife and two sons. The funeral and burial will take place today in Flushing.
And a third appeared in the Bath (Maine) Daily Times: "FORMER BEACON STREET PASTOR DIES AGED 81. Rev. George D. Stanley Was Located Here From 1905 To 1909. Word was received Thursday of the death in Flushing. Mich on Dec 31. of Rev. George D. Stanley, a former pastor of Beacon Street Methodist church. He was 81 years of age and had been retired from active duties for some time. He filled the pulpit at Beacon Street from 1905 to 1909 and was very popular with his congregation and in the city. He and Mrs. Stanley have never been out of touch, having corresponded with friends, among them being Mr. and Milton H. Douglas of York street. Funeral services were Jan. 5 from the Flushing Methodist church. He is survived by his wife, Ella, one son, Frank Stanley of Los Angeles, Calif., four brothers, James and William Stanley of Methuen, Mass., Robert Stanley of Clearwater, Fla., and Joseph Stanley of Andover, Mass., one sister, Mrs. Robert O'Hara, also of Andover, Mass., and five grandchildren. Rev. and Mrs. Stanley have lived in various places since leaving Bath, where he has received calls, but had passed some time in Flushing since his retirement.8 |
