Birth*Charlotte Elizabeth Stanley was born in July 1941 in Detroit, Wayne County, MichiganG. Her obituary states that "while she celebrated July 27 as her birthday, birth documents reflect three different dates among other conflicting information."1
Death-Resided*She died on 5 August 2021, at which time her residence was in Jackson, Hinds County, MississippiG.2
Betsy and John were living in Flint, Mich. when her mother died in Aug 1971 and in Jackson, Miss. when her father died in Dec 1978.

In June 1993 when their son Pieter was married they apparently were separated as a newspaper announcement of the marriage said that Charlotte was living in Tougaloo, Miss. and John was in Charleston, West Virginia.
She also went by the nickname of Betsy.
Her obituary appeared on the Tribute Archive website and read as follows:

Charlotte Elizabeth “Betsy” Teeuwissen was born in July, 1941 in Detroit, Michigan. While she celebrated July 27 as her birthday, birth documents reflect three different dates among other conflicting information. In many ways, the ambiguity of her birth and subsequent adoption defined Betsy’s purpose in life: helping those often forgotten. Betsy grew up in and around Flint, Michigan, graduating Flushing High School, and then obtaining B.A. from Alma College and Masters in Guidance in Counseling from Michigan State University. After college, she married John Teeuwissen and they moved to Pittsburgh where John pursued a Masters Degree and Betsy worked at the Homewood-Brushton YWCA. In 1960’s Pittsburgh, Betsy began challenging systemic racism by integrating the downtown YWCA and taking young girls to the famed downtown fountains to soak their feet during the hot summer months. After Pittsburgh, the young couple relocated to Ann Arbor, Michigan where John pursued his Ph.D at the University of Michigan and their only child, Pieter, was born. Betsy worked at the Michigan State Hospital for the mentally challenged and for the Flint YWCA where she had an office downtown but continued serving Y-Teens in Beecher and North Flint. The poverty and experiences of Homewood-Brushton would serve her well when John accepted a faculty position at Tougaloo College. Betsy was hired by the Jackson YWCA where she integrated the downtown Y, hired the first African-American swim teacher (a Tougaloo student), hired other young women Jackson State as programming staff and managed to advertise the Y’s programming in The Jackson Advocate. Betsy was proud that despite introducing many children in Pittsburgh, Flint and Jackson to swimming, no child ever drowned nor was any child injured during the many field trips. However, resistance to Betsy’s integration efforts led the Jackson YWCA to eliminate her position in 1978. With John enjoying his teaching position at Tougaloo, Betsy also turned her energy to the children of Madison County. The school district integrated in 1972, the same year Pieter started first grade. Betsy was an active parent, much to the bane of the Madison County School Board. She and Alzonia Banks formed the first integrated Cub Scout Troop, and then Betsy served as PTA secretary (2 years) and President (3 years) at the original Rosa Scott School. Her close relationship with Principal Timothy C. Crudup yielded unmatched fundraising results allowing for installation of additional water fountains, student lockers, glass backboards in the gym and tiling the entire school’s concrete floors. Only when they decided to install air conditioning in the formerly all-black school were her and Mr. Crudup’s efforts brought to an end. Betsy, unsurprisingly, got the last word: when subsequently asked to serve as PTA president at Madison-Ridgeland High School, Betsy declined. Instead, she became an original plaintiff working with the Hon. Fred L. Banks, Jr., challenging the 1980’s attempt to create a separate, majority white Ridgeland School District. Betsy’s efforts on behalf of Madison County children resulted in two occasions where a cross was burned in the family yard, one with a doll tied to it. After the YWCA, Betsy worked for Sears and later Trustmark Bank as an asset recovery specialist, all while continuing to find ways to assist the community. In the early 1980’s, she worked closely with Dr. Robert Smith to ensure the Jackson federal building would be named for Dr. A.H. McCoy rather than Sen. James Eastland. Betsy also volunteered in political campaigns, most notably those electing the first African-American Supervisors in Hinds and Madison Counties, George Smith and Karl Banks as well as Judge Denise Owens original 1989 campaign. In the 1990’s, she volunteered countless hours helping the Central Mississippi Health Clinic secure FQHC designation for the Winter Street medical practice. During this time, she was blessed to see her only child marry Lisa (Moman) Moorehead, and blessed with grandchildren who became the focus of her energy in later years. Betsy’s activities over the years included sewing by machine and hand until arthritis interfered, artfully wrapping holiday gifts, baking with her grandchildren and watching her granddaughters swim and play basketball. She also enjoyed gardening, creating a courtyard sanctuary she dubbed her effort to fight climate change. An avid sports fan - particularly basketball - Betsy dismissed most commentators as “overpaid yakkers”, participated in a football betting pool while at Trustmark as well as annual completion of the NCAA brackets, enjoyed the Olympics and later took an affinity to Formula 1 in support of Lewis Hamilton. Even when she became bed bound by amputations, she wore Michigan, Michigan State or Black Lives Matter t-shirts, occasionally to the chagrin of caregivers. Betsy was a unique person who charged into the fray, rarely held her tongue, but gave tirelessly. A Christian since an early age, she was a member of the Tougaloo College Church of Christ and also worshipped at Pearl Street A.M.E. until health precluded church attendance. Although losing both parents by her mid-30’s, after retirement she enjoyed returning to Michigan to spend time with her sister, Molly, her adored younger brother, Rob and his wife, Judy, and various nieces. Betsy leaves one son, Pieter and his wife, Lisa, grandchildren: Joshua, Nina and Lia. Her namesake and shared birthday granddaughter, Maya Elizabeth, and great-grandson, Alexander Pieter, both pre-deceased her as did her brother, Rob. She also leaves her former husband, John, and her forever brother-in-law, Pete. While many of those with whom she cherished close relationships transitioned before her, she was blessed to have her first Mississippi friend with her until the end, Dr. Patrica Freeman (and family). Funeral services for Charlotte Elizabeth “Betsy” Teeuwissen will be at Peoples Funeral Home Chapel, 886 North Farish Street, Jackson, Mississippi at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 27, 2021 with her final resting place being, Autumn Woods Cemetery, 4000 West Northside Drive, Jackson, Mississippi.

It is with broken hearts and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Jim, a truly extraordinary man whose presence touched every life he encountered. A loving husband, loyal friend, and brilliant soul, Jim lived a life full of passion, generosity, and unwavering love. Jim passed away in the late morning hours of Sunday, July 20, 2025 at the McLaren Hospital in Flint, Michigan. Age 57 years. His laughter was contagious, no one could beat his wit, and his heart…BIG!! Whether he was mentoring others, sharing laughing moments with family, always the life of the party or lifting someone up with his steady hand and warm smile, Jim was one of a kind. He leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and excellence that will live on in the hearts of his [spouse, Nieces, Nephews, extended family, and many dear friends].
